On Friday, August 22nd, a major storm producing hail, lightning, and heavy rain moved through the Monroe Area. Numerous residents reported seeing huge flashes of lightning followed by thunderous booms.
At approximately 2:30PM, the Monroe Fire Dept. was dispatched to a reported "Porch/Deck Fire" at 52 Bonney Ct. (Part of the 'Timber Hills' Townhouse complex). Shortly before arriving on scene, Assistant Chief Jeff Mahran was notified by Monroe Police Dept. that they had fire showing from the exterior wall of the second floor deck.
Upon arrival, Assistant Chief Mahran immediately advised Fire Dispatch of a working Structure Fire. 1st arriving units crew, Truck 538, forced entry to the unit involved in fire and was able to locate the fire quickly. The fire began around a dryer vent and had extend into the roof truss area between Townhouse units. Due to the remote location of the fire, the roof and several walls had to be opened to gain access. The fire was brought under control quickly and damage was limited to the wall/truss area between the 52 and 64 Bonney Ct.
Monroe FD assisted at the scene by South Blooming Grove FD, Chester FD, Washingtonville FD, Monroe Ambulance and Orange County Fire Investigation unit. Lakeside FD provided Standby coverage at Monroe's Station 1. Note: both Harriman FD and Woodbury FD were unable to assist due to them operating at numerous storm related calls in their districts. Orange County Fire Investigation attributed the cause to be a lightning strike on the building.
