Tuesday April 6th proved to be an extremely busy and challenging day for the Monroe Fire Dept. The day
began at approximately 9AM when the Monroe Fire Dept. was dispatched to a rubbish fire in the Village
of Kiryas Joel. The fire was extinguished quickly and units were placed back in service. At approximately
1:30 PM, the Monroe Fire Dept. was dispatched to an automatic alarm at 11 Quickway Rd. The alarm
was activated due to an apparent malfunction and units were returned. Upon returning back to quarters,
Monroe FD was dispatched to a reported Structure fire in the Village of Monroe. Units arrived on
scene and found an oven fire at the location. Monroe firefighters extinguished the fire and were
back in service within an hour.
At approximately 2:30PM, the Monroe Fire Dept. responded Mutual
Aid to the Woodbury Fire District for a Working Structure Fire on Bakertown Rd. The scene
of the fire was at the same property as a Structure Fire on 9/6/03. Woodbury FD's first responding
chief's were notified from 911 of numerous calls being received and due to the lack of hydrants
in the area, immediately requested tankers from Monroe, Harriman, and Lakeside FD's. First
arriving Monroe and Woodbury Chiefs found a large structure and 2 smaller structures fully involved
with a brush fire which had spread past two other residential buildings and had crossed Bakertown
road to the opposite side. The fire spread was due to dry conditions and high winds. The strategy
implemented by the joint Monroe/Woodbury command was to protect the residential buildings being
threatened by flying embers and to also contain the brush fire. Monroe FD responded with
Engine 537, Brush Truck M539 and Rescue 540. Mutual aid was requested to the scene in the form of Tankers,
Brush Trucks, and Engines from Harriman, Lakeside, Chester, South Blooming Grove, Washingtonville,
Salisbury Mills, and Tuxedo Fire Dept's. Cornwall FD provided Standby coverage in Woodbury and
Florida Fire Dept. provided Standby coverage in Monroe. The fire is currently being investigated
by Orange County Fire Investigation Unit. Monroe Unit's returned to quarters at 6:30PM
Upon returning from the structure fire on Bakertown Rd., the Monroe Fire Dept. was dispatched to an
automatic alarm at 8 Fillmore Court in the Village of Kiryas Joel. Monroe units returning from the
structure fire scene responded directly to the scene along with standby companies Florida, Chester, and
Harriman. The alarm was determined to be malfunctioning due to a power outage. Upon returning from Fillmore
Court, the Monroe Fire Dept. was alerted to a second automatic alarm at 153 Acres Rd. Monroe responded
once again with the Standby companies and found another apparent alarm malfunction due to the power outage.
Monroe Units then released the standby companies and returned back to quarters. While placing equipment
back in service from the fire, Monroe Units were dispatched to a reported Structure Fire in the Village
of Monroe at the barber shop on Millpond Parkway. Units arrived on scene within 2 minutes and found
a hair dryer which had caught on fire and caught the cabinet it was in on fire. The fire was extinguished
by a passerby who noticed the fire, gained entry to the building, and threw water on the fire.
Monroe units returned from the last call of the day and were in service at approximately 8:30PM.
