On Thursday September 16th, 1999, Hurrican Floyd hit New York. An estimated 10" of rain fell and caused major flooding problems in the Orange, Rockland, Putnam and Westchester Counties. President Clinton issued a "major disaster declaration" for these four counties above the already declared Federal Disaster Area for New York State. During the 24 hour period from Thursday 3pm to Friday 3pm, the Monroe Fire Dept. responded to an estimated 60-75 alarms. These alarms included flooded basements, automatic alarms, powerlines down, and mutual aid responses. Monroe firefighters operated thoughout the night and the next day.
