Structure Fire 85 Gilbert St.

On Wednesday January 31st at approximately 2:45 PM, the Monroe Fire Dept. was dispatched to a reported Stove Fire at 85 Gilbert St. in the Village of Monroe. Assistant Chief Bieber, who was located nearby, arrived on scene within 1 minute and advised units of a working structure fire. Upon arrival the fire was found to be burning in the kitchen ceiling and walls. The building was a large Victorian style structure with numerous apartments and approximately 35 residents. First due unit T538 was able to control the fire with an 1 3/4" line while Engine 537's crew performed a search of the building. Chief Terracino requested 1 Engine Harriman to assist with ventilation, a FAST Team from Woodbury, and 1 Engine Lakeside stood by in Monroe's Quarters. Although the fire was held to the kitchen area and rear of the structure, the building was condemned due to numerous code violations. Monroe was assisted at the scene by Monroe Ambulance, Monroe PD, and Orange County FI-14. Monroe units were back in service by 9:00 PM.
