Bus 183 Accident

The most serious and tragic incident the Monroe Fire Dept. has ever been faced with occurred on Tuesday Jan. 30, 1990. On this fateful day, a school bus loaded with children on its way home from elementary school veered off Orange Tpk. and struck a large tree. First arriving units were confronted with dozens of injured children with many critically and still trapped inside the bus. Monroe firefighters immediately began extrication while EMS personel performed triage. Assistance was immediately requested from neighboring departments and many other agencies. Two of the the 36 students were left in a coma and sadly later succumbed to their injuries.
