On Thursday Oct. 28, 1989 the Monroe Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire next to the Village of Monroe Police Station on Stage Rd. Responding units were immediately informed of a confirmed fire with people trapped in the building. First arriving units began search and rescue operations and were able to rescue several residents including an infant child. Sadly the occupant of the original fire apartment was unable to be saved along with another resident. The cause of the fire was determined to be a resident smoking in bed.
